Movie Review - Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus
This is a really hard movie to review. This is a B (and B is very generous) grade movie that doesn’t really fit into any genre as they tried to cram everything in. The video shop DVD cover that we got said it was a romance for some reason but in the end it seems to be an unintentional comedy. The story of the movie is as follows; Some sonar thingy that the government secretly dropped into the water causes the collapse of some ice which was witnessed by a couple of scientists watching whales in a stolen min-sub. Inside the ice was a prehistoric shark and octopus. They obviously escape and start destroying everything they can and in the end fight each other. There’s a romance between two scientists and a few other things but that is the general premise. Don’t want to give anything away now, do we?
So how do I analyse this movie? well given the type of movie that it is I have to take it from two angles. First from a critical point of view and second, from the point of view of someone just wanting to watch a crappy movie with some mates and take the piss out of it.
So lets get the critical crap out of the way. Why is this movie so bad? The script is crap, the acting is crap, the CG is crap, the inaccuracy of even the most basic thing is stupid and there are constant editing mistakes throughout the movie. Oh yeah, and it tried to give a career to Debbie Gibson post 80’s pop music.

Well now that we have that out of the way we can get to what was awesome about the movie. Why is this movie so awesome? The script is crap, the acting is crap, the CG is crap, the inaccuracy of even the most basic thing is stupid and there are constant editing mistakes throughout the movie. Sorry, I can’t excuse Debbie Gibson. That is just wrong. This movie is so bad that I’m not sure whether it was intentional or not. It is definitely best viewed with a few easy going friends and a little bit of alcohol.
We laughed our arses of watching this movie. It really was that bad. I’ll go through a bunch of things that we noticed that made the so bad and yet so funny at the same time.
- 50% of the film was actually recycled footage played over and over again.
- The lab scenes look like they’re mixing different flavours of cordial and pulling random expressions at the results of said mixing.
- A ship shooting forwards when the shark is coming from the side.
- A plane was going through a storm then suddenly there were no clouds around anywhere.

Those were the mildly funny ones. Now the real good stuff:
- At one point they forgot to actually put a bunch of controls and monitors on the green screen that were there moments earlier so all we get is a man standing in front of green.
- The same scene has a mix up with the many layers they have applied so we get a man with a soldier behind and a phantom gun behind him. There’s also the man in front of the green screen twice. One facing forward and one behind.
- You can clearly see the submarine captain confused as to where to look so he switches between Debbie Gibson’s nose and tits.
- The shark jumping 30000 ft to get an aeroplane.
- Lorenzo Lamas’ character tells Debbie’s character that her career is washed up! you can actually see the true pain in her face. Hilarious!
So that is why this movie was so very crap and yet made us laugh our arses off. I recommend to watch it once with other people. Watch it by yourself and it just wont be any fun. Any more than once and you’re just plain stupid.
