Not fancy but awesome
So I was listening to It’s Up For Grabs Now - The Arsenal Podcast with Alan Davies as I have done since it started and at the end they gave mention of a football website called Football Filter. Its a website that collates football news and podcasts from all the major english speaking newspapers, magazines and websites.
The website doesn’t look all that flashy but thats not what the website is all about. Its about the content and the functionality and it does it well. The home page is split up into the different types of media (newspapers, magazines etc.) which then have their latest articles. Each article is a link to its original page on the host’s website. However, when you rollover each article you get a nice little drop-down synopsis of the article which also says how old the article is. The rollover has a timer so it wont open as soon as you hover over the link which I know is only a small detail but it really annoys me when you go across a bunch of links and all their drop-downs open. You can also filter the content by each team or league which means you can get the info on your favourite team or league from everywhere without having any hassles.
Here’s the really awesome part of the website. Say you go to the site and read everything you want and then come back a few hours later. You don’t want to look through everything to find the stuff you haven’t read. So they have a slider in the top left corner of the page which increments per hour. So you can slide it to the last 3 hours and, using javascript, it will grey out all links older that what you specify (while remaining clickable) and tells you above the slider how many article there are. I think this is a really awesome bit of functionality which, while reducing time to find what you need, doesn’t remove any content.
So this site is definitely worth a look if you are into football or if you like great functionality.
